WriteGDF is an AutoCAD (Map) based program, process and procedure to create GDF (Geographic Data Files) files from AutoCAD data. It follows GDF 3.0 TeleAtlas specifications and provides tools to export geometric and attribute data from AutoCAD into the GDF format. The program is continually in development and at a significantly  advanced state of perfection. We have achieved full capability in modeling Level 0 and Level 1 GDF objects, complete with geometry, attributes and relationships and are also developing Level 2 features. Because of the complexities involved in GDF modelling, it is impossible to release a general-purpose GDF export program.

If you are interested to know more about creating GDF output from AutoCAD Map, please contact the author Rakesh Rao at email rakesh.rao@4d-technologies.com

Some GDF related information and resources:

What is GDF?:

GDF means Geographic Data Files, It is a  standard data exchange format and a data model (a complex data model). It is used to describe road networks & road-related data and is an international standard ISO/TC204 / CEN/TC 278.

ViewGDF (Beta GDF Viewer) is an AutoCAD (Map) add-on program that is shipped and purchased along with our GeoTools product. ViewGDF runs completely within GeoTools in the AutoCAD environment and provides tools for importing, searching, querying, comparing GDF files and also provides some analysis tools to query individual GDF elements.

This is the first add-on module we are adding to GeoTools and the GDF Viewer is available at an introductory price of USD 99.00 only and is currently available for purchase only as an add-on module to GeoTools i.e you will need to purchase a license of GeoTools in order to purchase 'GDFViewer'.

The Geographic Data Files (GDF) are used to model road network data for navigation purposes.

The GDF Viewer is a seperately priced add-module to GeoTools and contains a set of routines that can be used to view, query, analyze and compare GDF files within the AutoCAD environment.

The GDF Viewer commands are available under a newly-created pull-down menu within the GeoTools pull-down menu. Currently, the following comamnds are available:

  • IG_IMPORTGDF : Import GDF file
  • IG_VIEWGDF : View/Query GDF objects selectively
  • IG_SECTEXTRACT : Extract GDF sections (useful to split-up huge GDF data-sets)
  • IG_SEARCHGDF : Search GDF files for specific GDF objects
  • IG_GDFCOMPARE : Compare two GDF file structure (Record definition only)
  • IG_COMPQUERY : Analyze/Query Complex Features
  • IG_RELQRY : Analyze/Query Relationship records

The GDF Viewer is still in development and there is a long way to go to be able to handle all complexities of GDF data modelling. Your feedback and comments are more welcome. What we have assembled here is our first effort at understanding the GDF data format and trying to bring in that data into the AutoCAD environment.

There are still a number of glitches and known and hidden bugs in the program and we are attempting to refine and improve the program as much as our schedule permits.
