Command line:  GT_IMPEX

The GT_IMPEX command allows AutoCAD point and linear objects to be either exported to a variety of ASCII Text formats or imported from ASCII formats with a flexible control of the file format.

Exchange Mode
Allows to specify whether you want export data from AutoCAD or import data into AutoCAD.

Import: Select this option to import AutoCAD data from ASCII files. Choose Options to open the Import settings dialog box.
Export: Select this options to export AutoCAD data to ASCII files. Choose Options to open the Export settings dialog box.

Object Type to import/export
You need to specify before hand if the objects that you are trying to import or export belong to the point category or linear category. Objects in the point category include AutoCAD Point objects, Blocks, Shapes and Text Objects. Objects in the linear category include lines, polylines and splines. In the case of the polylines and splines, only the defining points are used. Any splinefit or curve fitted control points are discarded.

General Options
Specify general options here which are valid for both import and export operations.

File...: Specify the name of the import or export file. This file has to be in ASCII Text format.

Data Format: The data format to be used can be selected from the drop-down list box. This can be either of the following formats:

  • NE
  • NEZ
  • NEZD
  • PEN
  • PNE
  • PENZ
  • PNEZ
  • PNEZD
  • EN
  • ENZ
  • ENZD
  • PENZD
  • DNEZ
  • Other

where,
 P - Point Number
N - Northing (X coordinate of the point)
E - Easting (Y coordinate of the point)
Z - Elevation (Z coordinate of the point)
D - Description (A short text attribute describing the point)

Other - This will allow user defined object formats to be used. This is not yet operational and will be available in a future version.

Ignore lines starting with: While in Import mode, a comment string or character can be specified here and all lines starting with this will be ignored.

Delimiter to use(. for none): Specify the character (or characters) to use as delimiter between two fields. This option will be grayed out if the fixed column fields option is selected.

Fixed Column fields: If this option is checked, a new dialog box is opened and you have to specify the column widths for each of the columns and the output (or input) will be processed accordingly. In this case, blank spaces will be assumed to exist between the fields and each field will be read according to the starting positions mentioned in the column width dialog.

Export Options: These settings relate to exporting of data from AutoCAD (see Export Settings dialog box below).

Reset numbering for each new linear record: If this option is checked, each new linear record will be numbered from the start value of 1. Else, the first point of the next linear record will have a point number which follows the last point number of the previous record.

Create blank line between two line/polygon records: If this option is checked, a blank line will be created between two line or polyline records for easy identification of start/end of record.

Use a different last point elevation identifier for line/polygon records: If this option is checked, the last elevation of each line or polyline record will have a different elevation string as entered in the edit box below. This feature is provided because some systems identify the end of a line/polyline by reading a special value set in the elevation field of the last point.

Last elevation for linear/polygon records: Enter the special last elevation to be used in line/polyline records if the option to use a different elevation was checked above.

Each of these object categories above can be individually specified to use a specific property as its description. These properties can be either Layer Name (for all objects), Object Table Data (for all objects - applicable only in AutoCAD Map), Object Name (for Blocks and Shapes), Text Value (for text) or Attribute data (for blocks). One of these applicable values can be chosen from the drop-down box.

Attribute Tag: If the Block Attribute is chosen as a object description, the attribute tag value of the attribute to process should be specified in this column.

Table Name: If Object Data is chosen as the data for description, the AutoCAD Map Object Table Name should be specified here.

Field Name: If Object Data is chosen as the data for description, the AutoCAD Map Object Table Field Name should be specified here.

If you are not running AutoCAD Map, the Table Name and Field Name options above will not be available for selection.

Import Options: These settings relate to import of ASCII data into AutoCAD (see Import Settings dialog box below).

Create Point features as: Choose an appropriate Point feature to create.

Points: Checking this option causes the objects to be AutoCAD point objects.
Blocks: Checking this option causes the objects to be AutoCAD blocks. The block name is specified in the dialog box below.
Text: Checking this option causes the created objects to be AutoCAD Text Objects.

Destination layer:

Use descriptions as layer name: Choosing this option creates each imported object to be created in the layer named by the  description for the object.

Use Point numbers as layer name layer: Choosing this option uses Point numbers as layer name..

Current layer:
Choosing this option creates each imported object to be created in the current layer.

If Text objects are created.

Use descriptions as string:
If Text objects area created, then checking this option causes the text string to have the description assigned to it.

Use point numbers as string:
If Text objects area created, then checking this option causes the text string to have the point numbers assigned to it.

Store Point descriptions/Numbers as:
Specifies how the object description must be stored as.

Attributes: Descriptions are stored as block attributes. Specify a Block Name and an Description Attribute and a PointNum attribute in the drop-down boxes provided.

Object Data: Works only in Autodesk Map. Descriptions are stored as Object Table data. Specify a Table Name and a Description Field Name and PointNum Field Name in the drop-down boxes provided.

None: No descriptions are stored.

Multiple description import: makes possible for text files containing additional description data to be imported into the drawing as attributes, object data or plain text. Until now, only one description field was possible via the format descriptor PENZD,.. etc. Now, you can bring in as many and all of the descriptions into the DWG
